The Stomatological Hospital of the Air Force Military Medical University, headquartered in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, conducted free dental examinations and treatment on six children from three villages in Xi’an’s Huyi district on March 3, ahead of the anniversary of "Learning from Lei Feng" on March 5.
On the morning of March 3, led by their parents and the village cadres, the children came to the Prevention Department of Stomatology Hospital of the Air Force Military Medical University.
After the medical staff set up personal oral diagnosis and treatment files for the children, Xuan Kun, director of the department, and two doctors divided the children into three groups for examination and treatment.
Following the examination, the dentists found that the children had serious dental problems. They carried out pit and fissure sealing, whole mouth fluoride coating, caries filling, root canals and crown restoration for the six children.
The treatment would typically cost nearly 20,000 yuan ($3,092) but was free for the children, whose oral condition has now been greatly improved.
Xuan said that it's possible the children are generally unaware of oral health knowledge and do not pay attention to oral hygiene, and also that their parents do not pay much attention to dental problems either. Each of the six children had five cavities on average.
After the treatment, the children and their parents also visited the International Museum of Stomatology. The children were curious about the ancient animal jaw fossils, animal jaw specimens, human jaw evolution, oral disease prevention and many other areas in the museum.

In the children's oral experience area, children dressed in white coats, acting as "little dentists" and "little nurses", experienced a dental examination; inside the "naughty" doll, they learned about the basic structure of teeth, listened to the doctor's explanation of correct brushing methods, and further came to understand the importance of oral health.
